In our recent interview with Aditi Balbir, we asked her a set of different questions about her life and success. Here below you can read:
1.Tell us about V resorts and how you initiated?
Aditi Balbir— So I started a company called v resort back in 2014. Here the idea was that , people didn’t really travel to these small offbeat properties. But the trend of weekend getaways were becoming stronger and that’s when we came up with v resort. The idea was for the professions to look for get a ways which are within the driving distance of the major metros and they would be able to go to these places and detox from their routine, get close to nature, get better experience and basically the concept of v resort is experiential tourism.
2. What inspired you ? If any what are your strength and weakness?
Aditi Balbir– So that time the inspiration was basically to the give people options to travel from metros because at that time travelling options were limited to only tourist’s hubs which was already so crowded and it was filled with 4-5 stars properties but nobody really had the access to these small beautic properties. So the inspiration was something which we call as an alternative accommodation that was the inspiration even that then and air b and b was not yet there in India. Air b and b had the issue of self service and non-standardization
3.Tell us about your educational background.
Aditi Balbir– So I have born and bought up in Delhi. I did my graduation from Delhi University Jesus and marry college. Then went on to do law from simbiosis Pune. I have also worked with some private companies for couple of years like private equity firm and minchze. I did my MBA from ISB Hyderabad and Faqua, Duke University I have been able to demonstrate increasing enterprise value, for both my own and other startups.
4. How have your priorities changed from when you first started?
Aditi Balbir– At that beginning my idea was to look at it as purely commercial organization, we were quite immature in this field back in 2014 so all the process that were developed that resort was actually because of need. We have trained locals to look after because it was unpleasant for the professional to travel from the metro and work properly so we set up training school for provide locals basic hospitality grade level training. We started with local products at the resort due to transportation. Our main priority was to make how cost efficient a property can be but interestingly ghis turned into something that we call circular model in tourism and we were using the resources of local so they have to given ack in terms of good wages, training, general livelihood and better standard of living. So this became a very impact focus organization and now the priority is totally on the focus on the impact that we are creating “go one step forward focus on carbon emissions as well not just on local impact gender equality and right now the focus is on all the 17 United Nations SDGs.
5.What is unique about your business?
Aditi Balbir– So way back when we initiated v resort we started experiential tourism but now we are focused on micro tourism or impact based tourism or eco tourism. Our uniqueness is that we take all the resource from the local economy and then it also gives back to them in order to create circularity in the process. We work on local employment generation as well as sustainability and eco nature based tourism.
6. What led you to taking that first step and setting up your own business?
Aditi Balbir– Setting of a business is already very difficult and when you go into that space which is dominated by men it becomes much more challenging. Women entrepreneurs face challenge from all sides like investmental front as they take conservative approach while dealing with a woman as they are less seem in investing sector. Also at the beginning working with a very large team of around three thousand people at one point of time specially blur collar workers are working for a woman. Now when are scaling up this seems not much challenging as before. But this is a part of joinery where we fall and learn and challenges are the thing which makes us stronger.
8.What have been some make or break moments in your career?
Aditi Balbir– One make moment was when we won the United Nations tourism award for sustainable tourism and especially we were only chain ii n India to ever win this award, usually United Nations doesn’t award private organisation or profit organisation but we got it. Receiving such an award on a large global event at ITB Berlin that appreciation and creditation that UN gave us has really catapolted the career that’s why we focus more on UN SDGs.
One break moment for me was way earlier when I joined barings private equity. Very few people get opportunity to join such company and when I joined I felt very out of it and I even doubted myself that I can’t be a good invester. But now after 10yrs I myself have expertised in it and I’m on my way.
9.How do you define success?
Aditi Balbir– There is no such definitions of success really. Because everytime you achieve one success then you are after another and this does not have end. Awards accolades just help you in just keep going. Real success is when you create a large scale impact or which are adopted worldwide. Wave of Chain is what I define my success
10. What one piece of advice would you give any aspiring female business leaders reading this?
Aditi Balbir– So the best piece of advice I could tell you this is the best time to be a woman entrepreneur. Now women are becoming unicorn. Now there are lots of platforms available which should be grasped. It is easy to get funded. If you are a woman it is the best time to run business and to be independent
